IC:
Character name: Foulques of the Mist, or just Foulques
Character age as of canon point (As best as is known): Unclear but given context clues, I'm guestimating late 30s-early 40s
Canon format (Anime, manga, video game, live action TV, novel, web comic, etc.): Video Game
Name of canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon point: His death at the end of the Lancer questline
Is the canon point more than 6 months old in the US as far as you know?: Yep.
If not, as best you know it, US release date of the canon point: N/A
Completely optional history and personality section. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SKIP THIS!: Foulques on the Final Fantasy Wiki
Please list and explain the three worst (morally) things your character has ever done:
- Along with several compatriots, stole some money from the coffers of the Lancer's guild out of desperation
- Attacked and threatened a number of novice Lancers in his quest for revenge against the guild
- Killed a number of Wood Wailers (effectively Gridania's local police force) when they tried to arrest him after his last bout of such attacking and threatening
Please list and explain the three best (morally) things your character has ever done.:
- Took up the lance in an effort to both help protect his fellow Gridanians and overcome the Fantastic Racism they had against Duskwights
- It's implied that he served as a Wood Wailer himself; their pay being rather notoriously low causes other problems in game and is likely what drove him to steal out of desperation.
- Decided to confess his thievery and convinced his compatriots to do the same. It didn't work out in the end, but points for trying.
Please put the six things above on a timeline relevant to each other:
1. Takes up the lance to protect his countrymen and fight their prejudice
2. Implied service as a Wood Wailer (basically a Gridanian cop)
3. Along with others, stealing money from the Lancer's guild out of desperation
4. Confessing his thievery and convincing his compatriots to do likewise
5. Attacked and threatened a number of novice Lancers
6. Killed a number of Wood Wailers sent to arrest him
Do you consider your character a hero, an anti-hero, a good aligned side kick, a bystander, a victim, a fence sitter, a mercenary, an evil aligned side kick, a villain, or something else? Why?: A relatively minor and definitely tragic villain. He got dealt a very bad hand, and- as the guildmaster himself said- could have been an upstanding member of the Lancer's guild had he not been screwed over so much, but none of this justifies multiple assaults and murders.
Do you think your character should start on the Isle or in Auradon? Why?: Isle. See above, multiple assaults and murders, among other things.
Which of those two would you prefer your character to start in?: Isle
Are you still interested in having this character in this game at this time if that preference is not met?: Yes
Powers and Abilities: Being the 'final boss' of the Lancer questline, Foulques has access to all Lancer abilities aside from Chaos Thrust and True North. Since most of them are purely physical attacks, they wouldn't be hampered by the Isle's magic dampening effects. The only exceptions to this are Lance Charge, Bloodbath, and Second Wind. He'd also be lacking his boss ability to generate circles of damaging energy on the ground by stabbing his lance into it.
Even physical martial arts in the game's world involve channeling aether- a type of energy that's the source of all the world's magic and life- on some level (which is the in-universe explanation for attack flashes), but as far as gameplay here goes, it would really only make those flashes not happen, disable the above indicated abilities, and perhaps reduce his stamina slightly in protracted fights. Overall, he is a trained warrior, and even with a blunted/nerfed weapon would still have the strength and skill to make that known. Ie; if he 'stabs' you with a padded sparring pole, he won't kill you, but he'd probably still ruin your day and maybe leave you with some bruised ribs.
In terms of non-combat abilities, he knows how to hunt and fish with a spear, find edible plants and fungi, and generally survive in the wild in a forested environment. This also includes knowing how to cook basic things over an open fire with minimal equipment, and how to clean/dress fish and game for such, as well as how to build/tend a non-magical campfire.
What clothing/items did your character arrive with? (See rules and FAQ for what is allowed, feel free to ask if you are unsure): Foulques will arrive with this outfit, a combination of scale mail (torso), chainmail (boot covers and leggings) and hardened leather armor (joints, boots, and gauntlets). Underneath is a fairly basic cotton shirt and pants in dull green, and some equally basic cotton smallclothes (AKA underwear). He would also have some basic survival equipment on his person, such as a utility knife and flints.
While on the Isle, he won't have access to the hammerspace inventory apparently common to adventurers, but should that change, it would be found to contain a number of items commonly found or gained by killing monsters around Gridania, such as animal skins, bits of strong and sticky dremite web, bomb ash, mushrooms, and various bits of plants and meat. Up to my fellow mod whether or not any of the edible products are still any good when/if he eventually gets access to them. He would also have a lance with him, of course, though this would be initially nerfed to a sparring pole with a padded weight on one end, much to his consternation.
Optional- What do you have to keep in mind when playing this character?: Foulques tends to act arrogant and aggressive, but this is largely a cover for deep self-loathing and self-worth issues stemming from Gridania's Fantastic Racism toward Duskwights and the betrayal that led to his turn to villainy. He also despises cowardice and will react negatively to what he views as overt displays of it.
What mod candy, if any, does your character bring? (Aka what elements would you really like to see us play with?): Foulques trying to adapt to a more modern setting, as well as an urban one after spending his life almost entirely in the Twelveswood. Trying to explain commonplace concepts in his world to people unfamiliar with them and being on the receiving end of the same.
What else do you think the mods should know about your character or their canon?:
